Google updates its weather AI with hourly satellite-based forecasts
On September 3, Google DeepMind and Google Research announced WeatherNext 3. It takes in fresh satellite observations to produce a new forecast every hour.
Some variables, including temperature, are available on a 5-kilometre grid; others use 10- or 25-kilometre grids. Finer detail does not mean every forecast will be correct.
Google said integration into Search, Gemini and Maps would begin on the announcement date. Forecast data is also offered to researchers and businesses, including variables for wind and solar power planning.

If detailed forecasts connect to an AI that manages plans, the benefit could go beyond deciding whether to carry an umbrella. At home, a system could suggest storing electricity before sunlight fades or moving a laundry cycle. The house would compare forecasts with electricity prices and offer choices. If many homes participated, these small changes could help spread power demand across the day.
